The Gangsters of Love are two singers and musicians: Louis Janelle (guitar, drums, percussions and inventions ) and Gilles Bonenfant (harp and guitar). Small "gang" you would say, but one that sounds like "a full band". After having played on many stages in Montréal with various bands, the Gangsters of Love begin the year strongly with the launching of their first cd.
Louis Janelle plays the guitar while beating the drums (like Joe Hill Louis did) spicing the whole thing ingeniously with various percussions. He is the whole rhythm section by himself! Inspired by the older bluesmen's hand-made instruments, he often brings us back to the first times of urban blues. Gilles Bonenfant's harmonica is also highlighted here, sometimes electric, sometimes acoustic, his playing always true to the melodic and rhythmic tradition inherited from the pioneers of the genre. He sometimes switches to guitar, giving his partner more space to solo. This makes it possible for the Gangsters to explore many fields. The Gangsters of Love play mostly Louisiana Swamp Blues (Lazy Lester, Slim Harpo, Guitar Gable, etc.), Chicago Blues (Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, etc.) and also Swing, and Zydeco. The search for different rhythms and moods is one of the musical concerns of the group. Inspired by this great diversity of styles and grooves, the two musicians offer a quite personal and original interpretation of old school blues.
