Born in Chicago Illinois Mel started his career at the tender age of six. Singing gospel music at the family church on Sunday created his desire to perform. Mel began to seek out small local clubs in Chicago to do his act. Dinah Washington heard Mel is a venue and decided to give him his first professional gig! Next Mel went to New York City where he was signed by the Sunburst Label leading to his first hit single "Reward"!
