With a soulful voice, ranging from butter-soft to "100 yard howl" coupled with the ability to play multiple styles of authentic blues guitar Jon Short creates a foot-stomping musical experience that captivates audiences and generates a fondness for the songs, history and folklore of blues and roots music.
Citing the influence of pre-war greats such as the Mississippi Sheiks, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and Bukkah White his performances capture the feel and sound of the delta, piedmont, hokum and breakdown styles of Americana music. Using alternate tunings and various instruments dripping with mojo, his work on finger-style and slide guitar coupled with his locomotive delivery are as close to authentic delta blues as you get with his age and geographic location. When backed by his band The Barrelhouse Ramblers, acoustic sets feature an old-timey sound while the electric sets creep up to Memphis for a Beale Street sound showing the influence of Howlin' Wolf and the 3 Kings, and sometimes find him on piano or organ. During a recent two week tour of the East coast, he promoted his newest CD - HAVE BLUES, WILL TRAVEL volume 1; and continued to spread the word of the blues while receiving rave reviews. Starting in the Mississippi Delta at the JukeJoint Festival in Clarksdale, MS, he played his scheduled slots and also opened for Super Chickan at the world famous Ground Zero Blues Club. Throughout the tour he stopped for perfomances in Memphis (Mr. Handy's Blues Hall, Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale Street), Knoxville (Barley's Tap Room), and New York (Pete's Saloon). Jon Short performs weekly at Vincent's Bar on Suffolk Street in Worcester, MA and performs 100-150 shows per year througout New England.
