It is a modern majestic beautiful sweeping orchestra symphonic piece with roots in the romantic period style. It is not "a tonal" harsh sounding music typical of the 20th century. It is melodic and counterpuntal with ground breaking pleasing melodies never heard before
This premiere piece [Heaven and Hell] was written to express man's eternal struggle with good and evil. I think you will feel the joy of a thousand blue skies, the depths of despair, thick murky swamps, and clear purity. I wrote what I felt! I chose not to write unapproachable "modern" music. I don't like new and different for the sake of being just that. I wrote new and different melodies with modern harmonies that are beautiful and interesting. (Bob Selvin) The music from "Heaven and Hell" is to a ballet The plot is the following: 1. "The Beginning" is the first living cell that grows bigger and bigger. There is chaos but in the chaos are all the elements (charters) we will see and hear later. 2. "Growth" the heartbeat is heard and our hero's theme is heard. 3. "The Possibilities" has very primitive swamp creatures (reptiles) that are strange yet beautiful. 4. "Pure love" is warmth and love. 5. "Playing" is running, chasing, and having carefree fun like children. 6. "Struggle and Victory" all the melodies/charters are there struggling for dominance and finally "Growth" is victorious and is heard even stronger and more powerful than before. (More powerful with the help of the percussion!) 7. "The Demon" is introduced. There are three of them. One big like a serpent, one medium size and mean, and the third the smallest and simplest. They are evil, powerful and hungry to conquer others. 8. "Innocence" is our hero languidly lounging in a garden (Eden) that is a lush green complete with a small pond, fruit trees, and friendly cute little animals. It is beautiful everywhere. He couldn't be more relaxed or enjoy living more because everything is "so" perfect. 9. "Chased by the Demon" is when the Demons jump into the garden, our hero sees them and runs for his life to escape them. He eludes them for a while but is eventually caught by the neck. He is thrown into a dungeon, shackled to the wall and left alone. 10. "Rescued" An angel comes through the only opening (a window with bars) way up at the top of his cell, flies down and touches his shackles and they dissolve. She takes his hand and they fly up and out through the window and they are now free! 11. "Total Freedom" They rejoice and dance to the new freedom. The freedom is more meaningful now that our hero has perspective on just what he had to go through to get where he is presently. 12" To eternity" The freedom, happiness and sheer joy are promised to be eternal. This end is really just the beginning of everything to come! Bob Selvin (the composer) is a native Californian with a music style shaped by all the unique influences that happen to a creative musician growing up in LA. Bob's music compositions and performances span from CBS, NBC, FOX, Nickelodeon, Disney, Hollywood Bowl, The Academy Awards, MGM Grand. With a combination of modernity and romanticism, Heaven & Hell beautifully illustrates Selvin's unique gift for composition. (Michael Levine - publicist) The world premiere of Heaven & Hell was performed at the Fred Kavli Theatre with a 63 piece orchestra on January 17, 2003 along with Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony and was conducted by Elmer Ramsey.
