The Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet (BRSQ) was founded in the spring of 2002 by Charley Gerard. He was interested in forming a group with players who were at home in jazz, classical and other musical styles that lend themselves to saxophone quartet music. Talented, accomplished and versatile musicians soon joined him: Jenny Hill on soprano and tenor, Jeff Schiller on soprano and tenor, and Michel Göhler on baritone. The BRSQ has performed at the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art and other spots in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Fairfield County and was featured on Manhattan Cable TV Channel 34.
The BRSQ is a very unique quartet. It is unique in a general musical sense because there are very few sax quartets actively playing in New York and, more specifically, it differentiates itself through its eclectic interpretations and varied repertoire that cross over into many genres of music. Some are well-known pieces with innovative arrangements and others are original compositions by members of the group. In all cases, the music is selected to appeal to the mind and soul of the audience in surprising ways.
