No, this CD is not related to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, as it was released in 1995, and the piece of music with that title is named after a landmark suspension bridge in Sydney, Australia. However, a later Jade CD is dedicated to the victims of that event, and it is titled "American Dream", after a piece by Ann Carr-Boyd for flute & harpsichord, which is heard on this CD. This piece was written after the composer attended a meeting at a large theatre in Hartford, Connecticut, where a congregation of about 3,000 people was commemorsating Martin Luther King Day with prayers, orations and singing. The piece was re-released on that later CD with other new material. "American Dream" JADCD1090 is available at CD Baby.
Two bridges inspired music for this CD. In addition to Dulcie Holland's "Twin Towers", the new Glebe Island Suspension Bridge in Sydney inspired pieces by Gross, Carr-Boyd and Allworth, and its photo adorns the CD cover. Gross also contributes his stirring "Fanfopus" by Gross, played by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Patrick Thomas.
The marine theme continues with "Fairy Penguins" (Holland) and "Fur Seals" (Bartlett). Instrumentation ranges from solo piano to flute & string trio for Strahan's neo-baroque "In The Attic", which was written in 1968 as a playful exercise in period style. To record it, professional equipment was placed in the upstairs room of a North Sydney house, hence it can be said to have received its First performance "In The Attic." The gifted performaners soon after recorded several sessions of film music for Strahan in more conventional vernues, and the results of those sessions can be heard on two other Jade CDs available at CD Baby!
"Trans Australia Suite No. 1" (1968) is on "BEST OF AUSTRALIAN CLASSICS", JADCD 1065 and "Trans Australia Suite No. 2" is on "MUSIC FOR A CHAMPAGNE BREAKFAST" VOLUME 2, JADCD 1075 The music was a written for "Wheels Across Australia", a film documentary about the adventurous Leyland Brothers' transit of Australia by 4-wheel drive.
