Kurt Martinez's debut recording, Folias, charts the history of a work that has been used repeatedly by guitar composers for five hundred years. Kurt performs ten different versions of la folia illustrating the transformation this musical work has undergone throughout time as it has been used by different composers in different centuries. One will be amazed at how different each version sounds and how despite the ancientness of this musical work it carries a timeless profundity which has enabled it to live on for five hundred years.
Kurt Martinez completed the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Wisconsin Madison; he also holds degrees in guitar performance from Georgia State University and the University of Miami. Kurt has studied with some of the finest teachers in the world including, Javier Calderon, John Sutherland, Angelo Gilardino and Juan Mercadal; he has also performed in masterclasses for many world-renowned performers including Christopher Parkening and Manuel Barrueco. His studies have taken him to Europe where he attended the Corsi Internazionali di Chitarra in Muzzano, Italy and also studied flamenco guitar in Madrid and Jerez, Spain with guitarists Enrique Vargas and Manuel Lozano. Kurt maintains an active performing schedule and appeared in recitals throughout the United States, Italy and Mexico.
