This debut CD by Levendis Duo proves that improvisational energy can be marshalled into the service of classical-style thematic development.

Oboist Lenny young and pianist Joshua Yohe show an obvious mastery of their instruments as well as a deep musical communication between each other.

The three pieces on this disc show many facets of Levendis Duo's free-improvisation skills; yet this is but one element of their live performances, into which they also weave original composed material and works by past masters as diverse as Bach, Stockhausen and Ellington.

Since forming in 1997 as a side project of the creative jazz quartet Ensemble Duchamp, Levendis Duo has performed extensively throughout Pittsburgh, PA, opening for such diverse acts as Smog, the Spaceheads, Georg Graewe and the gold Sparkle Band.

In October of 1999, they completed a six-city tour opening for European violin improviser Jon Rose.

LENNY YOUNG, in addition to being a sought-after collaborative artist, is principal oboe of the McKeesport and Altoona Symphonies.

He has worked with local dancers and visual artists on a variety of interdisciplinary projects.

He is on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University's College of Fine Arts.

JOSHUA YOHE is currently in demand as a chamber musician, music director, teacher, accompanist and composer.

He has written award-winning large-scale compositions for orchestra and chamber ensembles.

He is on the Faculty of the Carnegie Mellon School of Music.
