A Year in Zurich: Album story
Two years ago I bought a grand piano. It all started when I found my apartment in Zurich. The first time I looked out of the wall-to-wall window opening onto the terrace, I knew that I would be writing music here. The view was breathtaking - brick chimneys, rooftop gardens, the snow- covered Alps in the background and as far as my eyes could reach; green. I could breathe, I felt inspired again. I was back in Zurich, my hometown, after spending 15-year in LA, ripe with musical experience, brimming with ideas and a burning desire to play my piano. I felt very emotional, knowing that this was the beginning of a new musical chapter in my life. The first part of my artistic journey had started as a child. I had grown up in a musical family where my dad used to wake us up every morning at 7 o'clock playing classical and his own music on the piano. His improvisations were highly spirited, although classical, had an exotic blend of some other influence... a slight breeze of blues, a hint of jazz. I realize now that these early morning awakenings sowed the seeds for my own musical compositions. I used to play piano as a child but then I was not very good at it. I had no discipline and didn't want to learn to read piano music. I only knew a few tunes. Whenever there was time to escape from our busy house, which also served as a boarding school, I would lock myself in a big room with a beautiful crystal chandelier where two grand pianos were facing each other and go wild. A few years later, a new instrument drew my attention. And so it was the cello that accompanied me through all my classical education. After completing my masters, I was a free man with a new dilemma. Cello was not really my calling, at least not in the classical field so I electrified it and that idea opened for me door to Hollywood movies. ... the remaining story is on Martin Tillman website.
