Throughout history, artists have frequently referred back to the past as a creative stimulus for their own work. Composers have certainly not been immune to these revivalistic tendencies. Ironically, this same propensity was never more evident than in the 20th century, a time when composers were attempting to break away from the tonal constraints of the last five centuries of music history, while simultaneously embracing the music of the past as inspiration for the future. Benjamin Britten's Nocturnal, and Frank Martin's Quatre Pièces Brèves are two such pieces from the twentieth century guitar repertoire which make ample reference in form and content to the music of the past. On this recording these works are contrasted with two pieces by the great baroque composer, Johann Sebastian Bach. This is classical guitarist, Michael Nicolella's debut CD, recorded in 1992.
