Jade CDs are widely heard on national and fine music stations throughout Australia, and are recognised as a valuable resource by educational authorities as being uniquely representative of the work of Australian composers. They are manufactured in limited runs of 500 and stocks are therefore may be regarded as collectors' items! All Jade CD covers are distinctive. Most Jade CDs have an anthology format and include works by several composers. It's great to have these CDs on offer for a wider audience at CD Baby.

"SOLAR DUST" JADCD 1080

Works by: Eric Gross, Ian Shanahan, Dulcie Holland, Gary Monger, Robert Allworth, Ann Carr-Boyd. Duration: 69'05".

"Solar Dust: Orbits and Spirals" for solo mandolin (1988) is one of three works by Shanahan on this CD written in the composer's advanced modernist style, inspired by his interest in celestial mechanics, and in finding equivalents in sound to the mathematics of the Cosmos. Gross's 'Three Pieces for Alto Trombone & Piano, Op. 210 (1996) were especially composed for trombonist Gregory van der Struik who performs with pianist Tony Baldwin. The pieces are, by turn, lively and lyrical.

Holland's contemplative "Soliloquy For Strings" (1996) played by the Orpheus Quartet complements the languid "Summer Haze" (1993) for solo piano, composed and performed by Carr-Boyd. Allworth's organ piece "Hymn to the Miracle of Lanciano, Italy" (1989) admirably conveys the sense of awe experienced by a priest witnessing the transformation of the host, an event reported in the year 742. Monger's short solo recorder piece "Gecko" describes a tiny lizard chasing moths and mosquitoes. It was written for and is here performed by Ian Shanahan.

The cover photo features a montage of two shots of Eric Gross receiving his appointment, as a member of the General Division of the Order of Australia, from His Excellency the Governor of New South Wales, Gordon Samuels at a ceremony in Government House, Sydney, 25/9/98.
