Celebratory, serious, dark and funny all at the same time! Bike! Bike! is a cd of compositions by Australian Trevor Hart that is is a unique blend of Egyptian, Spanish, Indian, contemporary classical, avant garde and free jazz traditions. Trevor Hart Quartet melds these disparate elements into a coherent and listenable entity. "It is all about having fun with complex music: inventing scales, playing with harmony and rhythm," says Trevor.
The funky title track in 9/4 was inspired by the first steps of a toddler and is emblematic of the joyous music of the Trevor Hart Quartet. Birdo is something approaching an avant garde nursery rhyme yet is composed on the template of the Kerralic 105 pulse cycle.
The Trevor Hart Quartet are: Trevor Hart on trumpet, Toby Wren on guitar, Andrew Shaw on Double bass and drum maestro Grant Collins. They are joined on several tracks by long term collaborator, violin virtuoso John Rodgers on several tracks. The Trevor Hart Quartet has been augmented by a string ensemble on the quasi Egyptian Bayan al Qasrayn, and a choir led by soprano Katie Noonan on Promise (which froms part of the mini suite Fin De Siecle).
Cover and insert art is by ceramicist Shannon Garson. Extra foldout art a woodblock print by renowned painter Joseph Furlonger.
THE TREVOR HART QUARTET
The Trevor Hart Quartet have been lauded by Australian critics for their compositions and live performances. Andrew Mountford observed, "In life, every now & then, something comes along that touches the very heart of things ..... but it's usually unexpected. This [the Trevor Hart Quartet] was lyrical magic that touched the core ...Trevor's true talent was all his own; lyrically longing, landscapes rolled past, like looking at scenes through a train window."
Another critic, John Mcbeath wrote that the Trevor Hart Quartet "..sounding at times almost like part of a classical ensemble as the trumpet meanders languidly against Andrew Shaw's bowed acoustic bass. Then there are cross rhythms, tempo changes, plenty of space for solos, and clever four-way interplays, all of which bring the music back to its jazz roots."
Another wrote, "They're tighter, stranger and more brilliant than ever... the best freeform jazz Brisbane has ever seen... prepare to be amazed."
The Trevor Hart Quartet is widely known for their legendary performances. They perform at an intuitive level. Each performance is unique; the composition being the starting point of a musical journey. "They plunge into the music ...with energy, fun and exciting improvisations that come from a shared intuition which, to the casual ear, sounds almost as if the parts have been written rather than being the result of spontaneous impulse'," observed jazz critic David Bentley.
Trevor is an Australian contemporary composer, trumpet player, and bandleader of the renowned Trevor Hart Quartet, the Trevor Hart Pocket Orchestra and Black Cat Circle. As a composer, Trevor is a creatively original auteur, who presents innovative ideas clearly. His compositions are a unique approach to improvised music. They create musical worlds that have been described as a deep musical and emotional experience.
Trevor's compositions use jazz as a language and reference point to create a distinctive type of lyrical free jazz. His compositions are range from large jazz suites to contemporary opera to deconstructed jazz pop of Black Cat Circle. They are often based on complex musical notions that, to the listener appear simple. In these compositions, each musician contributes something of themselves to make a musical idea complete. " I believe that music should be a democratic creative performance experience, " says Trevor.
Amantes and the following cd Bike! Bike! received rave reviews nationally. As well as writing for his various ensembles, Trevor has composed and was the librettist of a contemporary opera On Bloomsday set in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley night clubs.
