Composer's Notes:
"The Eroded Man", at the time of the September 11th attacks, was a long- and slow-developing MIDI studio project. It had begun as a result of a personal experience that, until that time, had seemed earth-shaking but quickly proved to be trivial in light of those truly earth-shaking events; but the emotional content seemed somehow to click perfectly into place for this project. I was lucky enough to break the collaborative ice when, in an online exchange, Hiro offered to track the alto flute part -- which brought an organic quality that had been sorely lacking, and began opening conceptual doors. The song, along with another that had been written the morning of the attacks (while listening to and watching the news coverage) -- "Bipolar Requiem" -- were submitted to the September Rising project, and while both survived to be on the "long list" of accepted submissions, "The Eroded Man" was clearly the most appropriate choice. After the selection process was completed, a number of musicians contributed performances, comments and criticisms, and encouragement. Of these performances only Frank's and Elmar's contributions (and of course Blake's mix engineering) survived in the finished recording, but the piece is very much a work of many minds and hands.

Composer's Notes:
The first half of this piece expresses our feelings watching the events of September 11th unfold. The second half of the song picks up considerably and represents what came next: getting over the shock and trying to do something. There's a part toward the end that's very positive, that is where we hope all this is all going.

Lyric:
I know you're scared right now,
Afraid to go or stay
Once we were black and white,
Now all we are is gray

Here in this breathless space
Dark like the deepest night
One step past disbelief
We'll bathe in velvet light

Climb into my arms, I'll take your weight and pain
Climb in to my arms, I'll take you home I'll take you home

Just let your head fall back
You're weightless in my arms
We'll rise above this place
We'll land away from harm

These clouds of smoke and tears
These sheets of painted sky
These vaults of humble dreams
These ships of vast goodbye

Climb into my arms, I'll take your weight and pain
Climb in to my arms, I'll take you home I'll take you home

Composer's Notes:
On September 9 I went to lower Manhattan to see the flamenco movie "Vengo" at a theater on Varick St., just below Canal St.--a few blocks away from the World Trade Center. It was a beautiful, peaceful night and I walked around the neighborhood before and after the movie. Looking back I feel like I was almost saying goodbye to this part of NYC that I love so much. "Vengo" means vengeance or revenge and this is part of what I felt as well as a tremendous sadness. When I picked up my guitar to write something for the project this flamenco/blues inspired piece is what came out.

Composer's Notes:
Manhattan Elegy is a new arrangement and performance of a solo piano tune originally called A Prairie Lament written in 1998 for my solo CD, The Old Iowa Waltz - Piano Solos. The original impulse for the tune was the farm crisis in the Midwest in the 1980's. Many of the problems from that time remain in the farm economy today, so the tune still feels current to me. I had always wanted to orchestrate the tune, so, when the tragedy of September 11 (sadly, also my wedding anniversary) occured, it seemed like a good time to create the arrangement and record it while the shock of that day was still very new. When the fine people of the MOTU-Mac list spontaneously decided to create the project that became the Blue Dove CD, I submitted the renamed tune in it's new form.

Lyric:
Intro: Unite

Verse 1:
We will come together, every race and every color
No one can tear usunder, united we will stand
We will fill the separations, bring together every nation
Sing the joys of our creation, united we will stand
Pre-Chorus 1: We will stand for peace
We will stand for love

Chorus 1:
We will unite, in the name of peace
We will unite, and never cease
the search for truth, the search for life
in all we will unite
We will unite, hand in hand
We will unite, from land to land
full of hope, full of life,
all in all we will unite

Verse 2:
We will join with our neighbors, touch the heart of every stranger
like sisters and brothers, united we will stand
We will share a common vision, lift the veil of indecision
there will be no more division, united we will stand
Pre-Chorus 2: We will stand for peace
We will stand for love

Chorus 2:
We will unite, in the name of love
We will unite, in memory of
all of those who lost their lives
For you we will unite
We will unite, hand in hand
We will unite, from land to land
full of hope, full of life
all in all we will unite

Rap:
We will unite, like we should, one Nation under God
Seeking justice, some arrested, who are evilly infested
We will win, they will lose, terrorism sings the blues
Hear about it on the news, unity is what we choose
When they attacked one, they attacked all, now they're gonna fall
Different races, other nations, teaming up for freedom's call
Freedom and justice will win this fight, all races and colors
We will unite.

Verse 3:
We will live on together, those lost will be remembered
January through December, united we will stand
We will build a new tomorrow, rise above all the sorrow
On the shoulders of our heros, united we will stand
Pre-Chorus 3: We will stand for peace
We will stand for love

Chorus Repeats: Chorus 1, Chorus 2, Chorus 1
