UPRISING is the second CD from THREE THIRTEEN, and here artist/producer Mark Harrell continues the musical direction begun with the first self-titled release. Although the path is similar, it does venture down deeper, and at times, darker avenues.
The Uprising referred to is not of a political or social nature. The term is used to comment on an individual's personal, inner change. A psychological and philosophical modification that occurs inside a person, within his or her own private world. This is exemplified in the last track titled "FINAL UPRSING". For nine minutes we are taken through three movements perpetually driven in lilting 3/4 time. Beginning in a rather sullen and moody realm, then moving into a brighter, ever expanding emotional space, ultimately concluding in a triumphant spirit indicative of a sense of freedom.
"REMEMBERING" is a beautiful reflection of love lost or friends long gone. The music has a tender inclination, consistent with a state of reflection. In the center of the piece we enter a dream, with waves washing over our memories, only to return once again to the bittersweet joy of our recollections.
Despite what initially seems to be an eclectic blend of musical styles, when heard as a whole, as was the composer's intent, the listener of UPRISING will move through a remarkably harmonious universe of moods and internal reflections, a place that must be heard to be seen.
