In the 19th century, it became an independent work of small scale, often a lyrical piece for piano. I like to think of an intermezzo as a time of rest in between the changing of seasons, physical or emotional.
Intermezzo is a collection of works by Spanish and South American composers.
My creative vision was to create a project that would take the listener on an emotionally visual journey of the culture, the life, of Spain and the café's of South America.
Enrique Granados and Issac Albeniz, both came from the Spanish nationalistic school of musical thought. Each of them received creative inspirations from the natural beauties in their native country from the vividly dramatic characteristics of their people.
The pieces Mallorca, Cordoba, and Granada all reflect the architecture, the landscape, and the everyday life. Mallorca, is an island city off of the eastern coast of Spain. In the music, one can hear the gentle breezes through the sweeping figures of the right hand. The center section the night spent between two lovers. Cordoba, starts with the solemnity of a church. The pieces transforms into a dance filled with emotional climaxes.
Ernesto Nazareth composed shortly after the time of Chopin. He performed regularly in the Café's and Dance Halls of Brazil. His pieces show great influence of Chopin's waltzes. Included on the CD are two of the waltzes and the Brazilian tango.
Fredric Mompou although born in Spain spent much of this time in Paris around the time of Eric Satie. The Cancion's included on this CD exhibited the lush rich harmonies and the influence of Jazz onto the Paris scene.
About me, I grew up taking piano lessons from the age of 6. During my teenage years I dreamed of producing a record. CD's were not in existence quite yet. After I finished high school, I did some soul searching about how I should spent my college years, and discovered that I felt most at home sitting at a piano. I attended school at the University of Arizona, where they had an extremely large classical guitar program. Students performed a lot of works by Albeniz, de Falla, Granados, Mompou. Through my professor who originated from Cuba and had an equal love for Spanish and South American composers, I was introduced to works other than that of Chopin, Liszt, Bach or Mozart.
After school I wanted to stay in the music field and make a living, whether teaching, performing, managing, playing for modern dance company's, or producing other people's CD's. Here is the first of my musical dreams. ENJOY
