"These quartets float effortlessly in a melodic style sometimes reminiscent of Gorecki or Bartok but always sound very English! Luckett's music deserves as wide an audience as possible." Avant Magazine
I embarked on writing these quartets initially as an exercise in learning about the resources of the string quartet but as they developed I came to enjoy writing them more and more and invested more emotion and invention. These pieces have a deliberately tonal and referential style in order for me to absorb some of the techniques and approaches of composers that I admire and are, for me precursors to further pieces for chamber ensembles in an even more ambitious style with a broader more modern vocabulary. They are however very close to my heart and were a real pleasure to write, rehearse and record. The pieces were played by the Aditi quartet: Sarah Freestone; violin, Jo Watts; violin, Emily Frith; viola and Gina Harris; violoncello. They were recorded by Jon Astley at Lullingstone chapel on the 12/09/02. Check out the artist's website: http://www.neil-luckett.com Track List: 1. Introduction 2. Judder 3.
