A JENN GRANT BIOGRAPHY
Four stars ****"Jenn Grant is one of the most promising young performers on the Halifax scene. Her agile voice and sharpening sense of contemporary pop-folk songwriting find a focus on this new six-song EP"-Sandy MacDonald- The Halifax Chronicle Herald" "If Jenn Grant could bottle enthusiasm and sell it on the street, the world would be a better place."--Megan Wennberg The Coast The career of folk-pop singer/songwriter Jenn Grant began in much the same way as most; singing into a hairbrush as a young child. Years passed and her performance aspirations kindled, Jenn fell infinitely in love with the world of art and over the years, her strong artistic flare would manifest itself in myriad creative outlets. However, it is the art form of music to which she has devoted her life. Jenn Grant's writing embodies the timelessness of jazz standards, the naked melancholy of roots, and the shimmering effervescence of AM-vintage pop into a hybridized music that is larger than the sum of its seemingly disparate parts. Jenn understands the cosmic connection between Patsy Cline and Brian Wilson, and her oeuvre has elements of both polarities and everything in between. Jenn is equally convincing singing in the muted and dulcet tones of Francoise Hardy or Astrud Gilberto, as she is belting out gritty and world-weary tones akin to Janis Joplin or Stevie Nicks. Jenn intuitively understands the power of nuance and is as beguiling a singer as you are likely to hear. Jenn has recently released her first self-titled EP and by anyone's standards, it is a bona fide success. The album is a steady seller at local independent record stores all over the Maritimes and sales off the stage have been unbelievably positive. Artistically, the album is a masterstroke for this singer-songwriter, revealing a Cohen-esque lyrical depth and musical profundity that is mature and assured. Jenn has played hundreds of shows in promotion of this E.P., and has recently headlined at the Shoreline Festival. In addition to her being a permanent fixture on the club scene, she has initiated a series of philanthropic concerts which showcase her musical talents as well as her social advocacy. From her E.P, the brilliant song "Don't Worry Baby" was included on "Funk in the Trunk-maritime jam" frosh CD compilation (sent out to all participating Nova Scotian Universities) and the MIANS compilation NSMW 2005 Spotlight Sampler. Recently, Jenn has been performing with the orchestral pop band "THE HEAVY BLINKERS" and has done engagements with them all through Ontario, with a tour of Europe scheduled for late autumn. Playing with the blinkers has afforded Jenn an increased exposure and access to a new musical demographic. Jenn Grant and her band are in the stages of booking festivals, fundraisers and other venues across the Maritimes, with plans to record a full-length album in the New Year. So keep your eyes open and your ears to the ground. Given her contagious enthusiasm, excellent karma and natural talent, there's bound to be plenty more of Grant's art and music for years to come.
