Lucky Mud's Underneath the Florida Moon is a celebration of our native soil. Maggie and Michael McKinney are both multi-generation natives - Maggie's family settling in Northwest Florida and Michael's ancestors choosing Central Florida, both over two hundred years ago. Who we are is a part of where we grew, and we love this state. And it is Southern.
The title track is a swing number about "dancing in the moonlight in the headlights of the cars," followed by Slow Duck Pie, a little warning to developers that there is "a big wind coming, blow it all away. Old alligator, gonna have his day."
Others on this CD talk about growing up in the swamps, about Cracker Cowboys (who still ride the range throughout the state), mothers who drive the family ("the Southern mama's just got to be strong, ‘cause the Southern daddy dies before too long"), and other stories. Our talk of moving to Western Ireland brought out Maggie's anthem called Leaving Florida; Smell the Blood was from Michael's side, the McKinney clan, with the line ("and everywhere a McKinney stood - you cut the ground with a shovel you can smell the blood). Ivan the Terrible is Maggie's song of the awesome destruction, so quietly under-reported, of the Pensacola area by Hurricane Ivan. Southern Zen is about the good parts, and starts with the Zen story - ‘I chopped wood, I carried water.' Then the embellishment begins. Distant hill is a spiritual with the religion left out, and The Sinkhole Song is a little ditty about how the world ends.
Janine Newfield's exquisite violin adds a third voice to our harmonies.
Unlike the other Lucky Mud CDs, Underneath the Florida Moon was recorded at home, using Roland's Boss 864 digital home studio and Sennheiser stage mics in an insane 14 hour session with Maggie and Michael McKinney and Janine Newfield. In keeping with the Florida theme, our local studio, Studio 812, was destroyed earlier by a hurricane. Our tracks were initially mixed by the Village Idiot (Mike) then later graciously remixed by Tom Hoots in the brand new Studio 812. Cover art and CD art are by the above-mentioned VI.
We hope you enjoy the CD, and that you visit the other, wilder parts of our wonderful state. You might be surprised.
