Tim was born and raised in Western New York State. He was stage struck from the time he was seven years old and cast in his first school play as one of Santa's Elves. Tim studied violin, clarinet, and saxophone through his elementary and high school years, managing to stray from the lesson to music of his own making. By the age of 14, Tim took up the guitar, performing in a variety of venues from emcee in variety shows, to plays and school band concerts. Somewhere along the line, he set his own songs down on paper because, as he tried to learn the songs of others, his own would appear in place of the printed music before him. Tim continued composing and performing while earning his degree at the State College of New York at Buffalo, played for friends and in local coffee houses when offered the opportunity. Joining the Army in 1976 gave Tim a new audience and new material for composition. Always wanting to write songs that touched the heart, Tim believes that others can identify with much of what he has felt and experienced...and in the doing know that they are not alone. Influenced by some of the great songwriters and artists of the late 60s and early 70s, including Neil Diamond, Kris Kristofferson, & Gordon Lightfoot, Tim used their creations as a springboard for his own development. Gordon Lightfoot's contemplative style particularly influenced his early composition technique and Lightfoot's easy style on stage proved a good model for Tim. Although easy to totally imitate another's sound and style, Tim was determined to follow his own voice. Over 25+ years in the military with family and professional obligations, Tim has periodically set aside his creative endeavors. It has been these very endeavors, though, which have fueled his creative side, driving him to return to creating music, stage roles, and fictional characters. His songs, his words, his style on stage all reflect the life he has lived. Army life has included numerous opportunities to share these experiences through song in front of foreign military and stateside national audiences in such places as Korea, Germany, Turkey, Kosovo, other parts of Central Europe, and US installations at Ft Ord, (CA), Ft Dix (NJ), & Ft Bliss (TX). He has sung as featured artist at Ft Hood (TX) and Darmstadt, Germany. Songs such as Names Upon the Wall, In The Morning, With Your Memory, Full Moon, Can't Believe I'm Missing You, and See You When I See You are songs forged from the experience of a soldier leaving loved ones behind or missing those close to them. These themes resonate with those inside and outside the military community, for everyone has been touched by loss, joy, and love. Tim is convinced that God provided him two talents: to soldier and to share life's experiences through performance. One feeds the other. Today, Tim continues the pursuit of life's creative side and of goals to sing, write, and perform full time. He doesn't try to sound like anyone else. When Tim sings he creates a close and friendly atmosphere as if the audience were guests in his living room. The voice is tempered with the experiences of life and the still youthful hope of what life has yet to yield. Tim muses about his songwriting, "Sometimes an idea, thought or feeling will fester in my brain and turn itself into a song. Or I will hear or see something that inspires phrases or catch lines. At other times I will be banging away on the guitar and something will just flow. Other times it's a work in progress and takes several starts and stops and different directions. Full Moon and The Mirror were songs that just sprang forth whole. Names Upon the Wall was a work in progress that took a long time. All I had at first were those words springing from a tradition followed at Fort Hood. Tears are Flowing in Texas started as the catch line and developed from there." This soldier-songwriter, is seeking new audiences and venues in which to share his unique voice and perspective. With so many artists sounding like each other and with major figures like Garth Brooks retiring, the time is ripe for someone different. Tim, a US Army Lieutenant Colonel, released this first CD with A.M.I. Records in 1997. The project got its start when Porter appeared at a showcase event in Killeen, Texas and met A.M.I. representatives. The project evolved around Porter's Army career as he was activated and deployed overseas. Four of the songs are from his extensive collection of original work. Six singles were released and promoted to local radio stations across the country. Six tunes made the Independent Chart, including: With Your Memory In The Morning Full Moon Can't Get You Out of My Heart How'd We Ever Get This Way Ain't It A Miracle The CD itself made the 1998 top CDs of the Year List on the same chart.
