Originally this song had been written to be sung by Johnny Cash himself for the theme of a biographical movie that was being developed in the early 1980's. For various "Hollywood" reasons that movie project was cancelled. However, at the time Johnny had made the statement after having personally reviewed the song that he liked it a lot and said it should be recorded and released as a single.
