Written by: Wade Branson

Workin' hard, lovin' hard, broken hearts, livin' it up and fallin' down, this is exactly what Stephen Combs' music is all about. Just like the singer/songwriter himself, his songs are an honest, straightforward reflection of country music.

I'm just get'n started,
Gonna sail this boat of life to seas uncharted,
If you think I'm stop'n here,
I'm only shift'n gear,
Let me tell you darlin'
I'm just get'n started

Growing up in Glen St. Mary (just west of Jacksonville) the Florida native has always had music in his heart. He's always had a dream about that music too. From singing in a small church as a boy, to thrilling fans at some of the largest country festivals in the southeast, what you see is what you get. This isn't slick Hollywood country music, but a down home slice of the boy next door that's in all of us.

What inspires his music? "Life, just look around. You spend all day long walking through potential inspiration for a song. I write about things that have happened to me, around me, or maybe some experience that someone shared with me".

If you want me, like I want you,
This could take a little while,
All you gotta do, is let me know,
There's that smile

Although he says the songs have always been in him, 2004 found Stephen in Pendulum Studios recording the appropriately titled "Just Get'n Started" with a band of good friends who just happen to be great musicians.

When asked what he enjoyed most about working on the album, the answer showed how close the band is. "Bringing my songs to life. I can sit around all day and beat songs out on the guitar by myself, but when I get together with a band that translate my soul into song, it's like hearing it again for the first time". While Stephen wrote eight original songs for the CD, rhythm guitarist and close friend Casey Wimpey contributed the ninth. Headed Southbound is an upbeat country tune that pays homage to all the great southern rock bands.

So how does Stephen describe his music?

"I don't really know that I can. I have classic style country songs, a little rock-a-billy, a little southern rock, a little bit of this, a little bit of that. As long as I can keep it country I just let it rip. I guess I better leave that one up to the fans".

Stephen Combs won the online voting as a fan favorite on the popular "Gimme the Mike" television show. He's had the honor of singing our national anthem at sporting events on numerous occasions in Jacksonville, Florida's Veteran's Memorial Arena. He was the winner of the Country Shootout at the Suwannee Country Music Jam in 2004, which led to him opening for Andy Griggs, Pam Tillis, John Anderson and Sawyer Brown in spring of 2004. 2005 has found Stephen taking second stage to big named groups, such as, LoneStar at the 2005 Spirit of the Suwannee Country Music Jam.

Most people would consider just one of these things an achievement they could rest their hat on. Stephen just smiles and shakes his head, "No, I'm just get'n started".
