Indeed, Ferguson's just released eleven-song CD is a wonderfully mellow medley of jazz (influenced by his jazz musician son, Todd Ferguson), gospel standards (which go back to his roots at the Sugartree Ridge Methodist Church) and easy-listening country classics like "Tumbling Tumble Weeds," and "KIsses Sweeter Than Wine."
Recorded at Jewel Recording Studio in Mt. Healthy, Ohio under the tutelage of Rusty and Linda York, "Showers of Blessing," takes its name from a medley that Ferguson frequently sings without accompaniment.
However, for the CD, the three-song medley (made up of the gospel hymn, "Count Your Blessings," the show tune, "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep," and the hymn, "Showers of Blessing,") is accompanied by Ferguson's son on upright bass and by Todd's girlfriend, Susan Smyth on piano. The three combine to give the title tune an improvised, soft gospel-jazz fusion.
Ferguson put together his first collection in 1978, called "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow."
This was followed by "Old Hymns and "New Songs," in 1979 which included six of Ferguson's original songs. The family moved to Florida in 1980, where he sang with a mixed quartet called "Inner Spirit."
In 1983 the group released "Inner Spirit-The Spirit Sings,"
Moving back to Highland County, Ohio in 1986, he compiled "Worth Tellin'" in 1990. In 1995 he released a collection of Christmans carols and hymns titled "Christmas Ridge." This includes a song he wrote called "The Church On The Ridge," a musical memory of the Sugartree Ridge Methodist Church. Lyrics: THE CHURCH ON THE RIDGE
Verse 1 There is a church on the top of Sugartree Ridge it stands among the sugar maple trees. Inside the people sing and they pray to the Lord at the altar reverently upon their knees. Oh hear that old bell ring then hear the people sing at the church on the ridge among the trees. Chorus: Oh that church on the ridge sends out the word of God down through the valley and to many distant lands. Some serve the Lord at home while others travel far and they all are guided surely by God's hands. Verse 2: Oh to that church on the top of Sugartree Ridge on Sunday morning hand in hand we came. We heard the gospel preached right from the word of God and the congregation praised His holy name. Praise the Father and Son, the Spirit three-in-one. He has taken away all of our blame. Chorus: Oh that church on the ridge sends out the word of God down through the valley and to many distant lands. Some serve the Lord at home while others travel far and they all are guided surely by God's hands. Tag: Yes, they all are guided surely by God's hands.
