Conjunto Hueyapan of Oxnard, California was founded by Professor Fermin Herrera in 1973. The family ensemble has dedicated itself to the perfromance and research of the son jarocho. The group has conducted several important research projects that have resulted in the documentation and preservation of the son mexicano in general and of the son jarocho in particular. It has performed in colleges, universities, and concert halls throughout the nation, Mexico and Europe. Group members learned to play jarocho music in their native California and perfected their skills under the guidance of master musicians in Mexico City and Veracruz such as Lino Chavez, Mario Barradas, Nicolas Sosa and others. Conjunto Hueyapan is a family group consisting of four brothers ( Fermin, Andres, Jorge and Tomas Herrera), one sister(Maria Isabel Herrera) and Fermin's two sons (Xocoyotzin and Motecuhzomah).Performance credits for Conjunto Hueyapan include: the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; The Dorothy Chandler Pavillion of the Los Angeles Music Center; The Filene Center of Wolf Trap for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia; President Ronald Reagan's 1985 Inaugural Ball; the Hollywood Bowl; the Greek Theatre in Hollywood, California; the main concert (featured perfromers of the son jarocho)for the Conferencia de Arpa in Xalapa, Vercruz; The "Encuentro de Jaraneros" in Tlacotalpan, Veracruz; The "Encuentro de Huapangueros" in Amatlan, Veracruz; the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival; The Festival of American Folk Life In Washington, DC; The Performing Arts Center of the University of Texas at Austin; "Siempre en Domingo" Television Program from Mexico City; The Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena; UCLA's Royce Hall Auditorium; The Universal Ampitheatre and numerous other venues and television programs throughout Mexico and the United States.
