Slack Key Story - Ho'omau - Continue the Tradition
The talented and creative couple of Hawaii's slack key scene - Doug & Sandy McMaster - have been back in their studio on Kauai. The result is a beautiful collection of traditional slack key music played in Doug's inimitable nahenahe style with the soothing sound of Sandy's voice telling the story of slack key. Their love of the Hawaiian tradition of slack key and their dedication to ho'omau (continue the tradition) wash over you in waves as you experience the music and hear the rolling Hanalei surf. This release will treat you to 17 tracks of slack key guitar favorites, an ipu (gourd drum) and Hawaiian nose flute (ohe hano ihu) solo, and slack key ukulele all encompassed in the embracing arms of Hanalei Bay surf. Once in a while someone comes along that is fully living and expressing their gifts and living their life's mission -- "Going long", "Putting it all on the line." Doug and Sandy are both examples of these rare species. Doug was obviously born to play Hawaiian slack key ... he probably was a paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) in an earlier incarnation. Sandy is a natural musician as well as a gifted storyteller. Listening to her weave tales of slack key and Hawaii, you would never realize she's a very shy person. She's found her voice in slack key. A fan from Seattle, WA says "It's very different from anything else you - or anyone else that I know of - has done in connection with ki ho'alu. It's a great history of Hawaii for all. It's so accessible. Anyone, of most ages, can enjoy it and learn from it. You've done a really great service in the history of Hawaii and of ki ho'alu. Mahalo nui loa!." According to a fan from Southern California, "You've more than publicly admitted / committed your life's ambition... it is undoubtedly one of the finest and unique contributions to the preservation of Slack Key music. I loudly applaud you for your sacrifices and efforts to produce this CD. Sandy's soft, clear voice & Doug's always clean keying and selection choices are ... well, it's wonderful." Audiences at the McMaster's concerts on Kauai (Fridays 4pm and Sundays 3pm at Hanalei Community Center) are often moved to tears as they share their traditional style slack key and the stories behind the songs. Now, if we could just get them to tour the islands or at least play outside of Hanalei, more of us would get to experience, first hand, their special gifts.
