Dougal Adams and Ormonde Waters “The Good Earâ€
Dougal and Ormonde both emigrated to Australia in the 1960s from Scotland and Ireland respectively. Over time both have developed a love of Irish traditional music and have been enjoying each others musical company for over 15 years. For some time each has tried to persuade the other to do a solo recording, however , over the past 12 months they realised it was the joy of playing together that needed to be recorded. Despite both being multi instrumentalists they decided to narrow the focus and produce a flute/concertina recording. The result is a collection of Irish traditional tunes from their collective repertoire. in addition to 3 new compositions by Dougal and Ormonde and 2 Scottish pieces. For the recording they are joined by Ben Stephenson (Member of the well known Australian band "Trouble in the Kitchen") on guitar, bouzouki and bodhran and Jackie Wynne (from London) on guitar. Reviews: 1. "From the opening reel,Pigtown, this recording continues to impress as a fine example of Irish Traditional music.....The recording has great clarity with all the instruments being audible and well separated....This is fine music for listening to,is well researched and well programmed...I would recommend it to anyone who likes Irish music that is played with sensitivity by dedicated exponents." Russell Johnsen,Trad and Now Magazine 2. "The Good Ear is a well crafted album from Perth musicians Dougal Adams ( on flute) and Ormonde Waters (on concertina)...a lovely selection of tunes and excellent backing ( guitar and/or bodhran ) it is a well-rounded album." ptollemy.tripod.com 3. "Wooden flute and concertina represent relatively uncommon duo mates in Celtic music, which fortunately didn't stop Australia's Dougal Adams and Ormonde Waters from trying it. Their instrumental CD The Good Ear { self released CDAW01 (2005)} nicely contrasts the earthy sound of the flute with the reedy hum of the button studded little squeezebox in 14 sets of mostly Irish tunes, simply arranged with a pub-session feel. The pairings are both slow and deliberate as in the atmospheric " Lament for Reverend Archie Beaton" and brisk and sprightly,as in the "Bird in the Bush" reel set." Tom Nelligan,Dirty Linen Magazine(Feb/Mar-2006)-The Reel World. 4. "Some lovely, completely unselfconcious ( mostly) Irish music recorded in Australia. This lovely, easy pairing of flute and concertina is backed by guitar and occasional bodhran. There's a mellifluous quality to the music that flows with the joy of a summer brook." CN,Sing Out Magazine,Spring 2006,Vol.50#1 5.
