The genesis of Edsall Road occurred during the summer of 1996 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Matt Tourville and Billy White were there, performing in the Nova Scotia International Military Tattoo with the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. While there, they discovered a similar interest in traditional Scots/Irish music. By the end of the trip, Matt and Billy were spending their days on the streets of Nova Scotia playing flute and bodhrán for crowds of passers-by. After returning to Northern VA, Matt and Billy enlisted Charles White to form a trio. The band's most recent addition is Josh Dukes who brings a myriad of instruments to the band, including Low D whistle and bouzouki. Throughout the band's eight year run, Bill White, Sr., Billy and Charlie's father, has joined the band whenever possible, bringing along his fiddle and collection of great songs and stories.
Edsall Road has performed all over Virginia, Washington D.C. and Maryland including stints at Ireland's Four Provinces, Pat Troy's, Kate's Irish Pub, Ireland's Four Courts, Sine's, Sullivan's Irish Pub and Molly's Irish Pub. In addition to playing the local pubs, Edsall Road has headlined numerous concerts, benefits and Arts Festivals, including Williamsburg's "Occasion for the Arts" and the St. Thomas Music Festival in McLean, VA. The band has also performed at the Hennage Auditorium in Colonial Williamsburg's DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Gallery and done sound-track work for Colonial Williamsburg Video Productions. In 2001 Edsall Road released their debut CD, "a long time coming..." Ten years on from the first days in the streets of Nova Scotia, Edsall Road has developed a solid reputation as a fun and energetic ensemble, performing the traditional music of Scotland and Ireland as well as some of the best contemporary celtic folk and their own original compositions.
