Chestnuts are old jokes or stories, because roasted chestnuts were eaten by old folks sitting around the fire swapping songs and stories. These songs could have been sung around those long-ago fires, and Faye and Bob have sung them for audiences in coffeehouses and at parties in great communal parlors.

Bob's fiddle soars on old Russian songs and the medieval tune of "Greensleeves." Faye's powerful mezzo wails ancient Jewish laments and down and dirty blues, accompanied by her own piano-playing. Liner notes provide historical sidelights for the songs and the performers, who are a pair of old chestnuts themselves. We may not be completely authentic (medieval music for fiddle and piano?) but it's definitely old-timey.
