Moira Nelligan was born on St. Patrick's day in
Savannah, Georgia, on March 17th, 1962 -the day Harry Truman came to town. It was Dr. Angel who delivered the precious bundle into the world that day to a mom who was relieved to have a daughter after 5 stinky boys! She grew up learning to sing from her Irish Catholic parents, Tom and Susie Nelligan, who woke little Moira every morning singing "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" from "Oklahoma." She studied piano and violin in childhood, but did not embrace the traditional Irish music of her heritage until she discovered it during a trip to the West Coast of Ireland as a young adult. When she came back to Georgia, with her daddy's fiddle which he gave her when she graduated from high school, she set out to learn jigs and reels and hornpipes from recordings. Later, at the summer workshops at the Augusta Heritage Arts Center in West VA, Moira was able to learn Irish fiddle tunes from great fiddlers like Liz Carroll and Kevin Burke and Eileen Ivers, as well as Cajun tunes from Dewey Balfa and Quebecois tunes from Lisa Ornstein. For about 20 years, Moira has been singing and fiddling- and lately whipping out her accordion- at all kinds of traditional music loving venues in GA like the Savannah Irish Festival, the Atlanta Celtic Festival, The North GA Folk Music Festival, the Annual Celtic Christmas at Emory, weddings, Celtic Bar Mitzvahs, coffeehouses galore, and pubs here and there, like the James Joyce Pub in Avondale. When she's not playing music, Moira loves to teach. A proud teacher of the Music Class program for young children, she also teaches fiddling and singing in her home. The Nelligan School of Traditional Celtic Music was born out of this passion and also aims to help teachers of other instruments find students who are wanting to learn to play traditional music the traditional way: by ear. Moira loves her adopted home town of Decatur, Georgia, where she is raising her two boys, Mickey and Moses, with her husband, drummer, dance partner and artist-in-residence Michael Hickey.
