Romanian folklore is one of the most difficult types of music around the world to be played. It has intricate and difficult ornaments and it REQUIRES THE ACCORDION PLAYER TO BE EXTREMELY VIRTUOSO. Nicu Helerea is the only accordion player able to interpret folk songs from ALL the regions of Romania.
Nicolae Helerea was born on December 21, 1949, in a small village named Hosman, near Sibiu, Romania. As a child, being fascinated by music and showing extraordinary talent, he learns to play the harmonica by himself. Saving every penny he could, he is later able to buy himself a small accordion, the instrument that he falls in love with and becomes the passion of his life. Dedicating his life to music, he moves to Brasov where he takes up accordion classes at the Music and Arts School. Once graduated, he returns to his natal county of Sibiu, where he later graduates from the Music and Arts High School. He becomes a professional musician and he is employed as the Lead Solo Accordion Player at the professional folklore orchestra “Cindrelul & Junii Sibiuluiâ€. His talent and ambition, studying 8-10 hours per day, establishes him as one of the best accordion players in Romania being solely able to play various types of folklore from all the regions of the country (Transilvania, Banat, Maramures, Oltenia, Moldova, Dobrogea). Becoming popular and in demand, he travels throughout the country and Europe giving many concerts. In 1985 he performs in the U.S.A. with a 45 member orchestra where he remains and where he continues to expand his repertoire. He soon learns to play other types of music being especially fascinated by jazz and big band music. His repertoire now includes Italian, French, German, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, Russian, Greek, Scandinavian, Irish, Spanish and American music.
