Rosemary Phelan:stars and stones -- reviewed in SING OUT! Vol. 48 #4 Winter 2005 "This peaceful album is like the warm surf of the bluest ocean. Step into it, open your arms and let the beauty of her gorgeous voice and lush arrangements wash over you. Many songs, like the title cut, take on a Celtic flavor with the harp and the light trills in her voice taking center stage. At other times, there's a more traditional American folk feel, like "Ramblin' Girl", which features a lively fiddle, Dobro, sturdy church harmonies and a chorus that'll have you singing along. "Let My Life Be Prayer", one of the few songs she didn't write (Ken Whitely penned this one), has great Gospel piano and solid harmonies that build as the song progresses. The arrangement on "The Shores of Manitou / Rare One" is absolutely beautiful, starting with her harp, then gradually adding guitars and djembe; they drop out, revealing a prayer-like love song rich with imagery and pretty vocals. The disc ends strongly with "Whelan's Jig / It Is Finished In Beauty". Starting with Sahra Featherstone's joyful fiddle, it segues into a slower tempo for a traditional Native American prayer adapted and made into song by Rosemary.
