Join California Revels with Irish singer Shay Black, piper Jerry O'Sullivan, fiddler Liz Carroll, storyteller and harper Patrick Ball, harpist Cheryl Ann Fulton and Distant Oaks, for a rousing Christmas in an Irish Castle. We take you to the Great Hall of the bold Brian O'Rourke, where grand Christmas festivities are underway: food and drink for all, dancing, carousing and reveling. Hear the magical story of St. Patrick and The Deer's Cry set to one of Revels' favorite tunes, The Abbots Bromley Horn Dance; holiday carols like The Holly and the Ivy and Drive the Cold Winter Away; a wild stick dance by Morris men to the tune King of the Fairies; The Sussex Mummers Carol with uilleann pipes, drums and harp, and world class performances of popular Irish jigs and reels. Join us as we welcome the return of light from darkness! --------------------------------------------- What is California Revels? A Holiday Tradition in the San Francisco Bay Area for the past sixteen years and around the country for the past three decades, the Christmas Revels is a theatrical, participatory celebration of the Winter Solstice that crosses religious and ethnic boundaries, appeals to young and old alike, and have been growing like wildfire around the country. Revels blends traditional music, dance, ritual and folk plays, presented by a large volunteer chorus of children and adults drawn from the community, and a number of highly talented professional actors, musicians, artists, directors, and "bearers of tradition" from many cultures. A cherished hallmark of Revels productions is the ability to draw the audience itself into the magic of the show, usually by joining the cast in song and dance. This CD is a collection of material that ultimately developed into Revels Christmas Show in December 2001. Celebrations of cultures using traditional materials and seasonal rituals is a common theme in Revels performances, each year highlighting a particular culture and period. Any given year might range from a medieval English court to an Appalachian homestead in Kentucky, from a Russian village to the land of the midnight sun...
