Shay, Michael and Martin Black are members of Ireland's foremost family of song. Their work has been described by critics as "exquisite", "exhilarating" and "nothing short of stunning".
The brothers are regarded amongst the finest and most popular singers in Ireland. They are noted for their strong voices: Shay's is robust and hearty, Michael's a thrilling tenor, and Martin is known for his deep-chested counter harmonies. Their solos and close harmonies display an unalloyed joy in singing.
Shay lives in Berkeley, CA. He is active in the Irish community in the East Bay area and runs an Irish music and song session at the Starry Plough pub in Berkeley every Sunday night. He is a member of Nauticus, a four piece musical group that performs maritime music in and around the bay area. He lived for many years in Liverpool, England where he sang with the group Stormalong John and collected a large repertoire of maritime and sea songs from the highly regarded shanty singer, Stan Hugill. Shay now works at Parental Stress Service, a child abuse prevention agency in Oakland and has two daughters, Anna and Seosaimhin.
Michael tours extensively both as a solo performer and with some of Ireland's finest musicians. He teaches sociology at San Francisco State University. Michael, his wife Sonia and their three daughters, Ciara, Maeve and Catriona live in San Francisco.
Martin performs regularly as a solo act in Dublin as well as playing many benefits for social & political causes. He lives in his native Dublin and has four children, Sarah, Emily, Michael and Kevin.
