According to J.C. Lockwood of the North Shore Sunday: “ The Squeezebox Stompers, which at times features a two- accordion attack, play an eclectic and breezy mix of rootsy music- sometimes with an Irish flavor, sometimes Cajun. There’s folk, there’s blues, there’s Zydeco. It’s a mix of new and old, traditional but pertinent…. The disc opens with “ Michigan Water,†an adaption of a classic Jelly Roll Morton tune, then slides into†Those People,†an upbeat original tongue-in cheek “ode to intolerance.†There’s four other originals, like Campfire Waltz,†a tune that sounds as dusty as any sad trail song you can name, and traditional numbers like “Maggie in the Woods†and “Old JoeClark.â€
The disc also revisits the sadly all-but-forgotten Fiddlin’ Arthur Smith and his Dixieliners, a violinist celebrated for his aggressive longbow style in the ‘30s, with a swinging bluesy cover of “Dickson County Blues.†There’s also contemporary Zydeco legend C.J. Chenier’s irresistible dance number, “Bow Legged Woman.†Call the music what you want, but the Stompers certainly bring credibility to the project. All are veterans of the local music scene and have crossed paths musically over the past three decades. They also, despite differing approaches, tap into the same vein of experience and resources.†Check out the artist's website: http://www.squeezeboxstompers.com Track List: 1. Michigan Water 2.
