Jim Bennett has been making music for more than 30 years. His background is eclectic, as is his playing style. He loves to play ragtime, stride piano, swing, blues, rock and classical music. Jim’s training included studies at the State University of New York at Binghamton, Virginia Commonwealth University (Jazz Studies) and Skidmore College. His musical experiences have helped to grow his improvisational skills. Jim has been a musician for dance (modern, ballet, jazz and improvisation) since 1982, working at the College of William and Mary from 1984-1987, the School of the Richmond Ballet, and at Virginia Commonwealth University's Dept. of Dance and Choreography for several years in the 1990s, serving as music director. Jim has played in various ensembles and as a soloist, as well as accompanying vocalists. He served as music director in three Richmond churches, leading choirs and arranging music for small ensembles and soloists. Currently, he is the accompanist at Shady Grove United Methodist Church. Jim’s playing skills have been sought after for studio recording by several area and out of state musicians.
