Jim Mayer
a.k.a. "Uncle Jim" The term 'Uncle Jim' is not a figurative one. Jim has 26 nieces and nephews! He started writing children's music years ago when he would sing to them - - and they would come back months later singing the same songs! Jim's talent shines on both electric and upright acoustic bass, playing with performers ranging from jazz legend Mose Allison to Ringo Starr. As a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer band since 1989, Jim has been writing, recording and performing worldwide with Buffett, and appearing on numerous television shows. Jim also co-writes and performs across the U.S. with his brother, Peter Mayer. Jim, Peter, and drummer Roger Guth (another member of the Coral Reefer band) performed together in 1985 as the pop group "PM" with a top 10 hit, "Piece of Paradise", released on Warner Bros. Records. Jim resides in Nashville where he's working on completing a children's storybook and his second "Uncle Jim" CD. All of the material on "Funky As A Diaper" has been child tested and some of the songs have even been co-written with Jim's nieces and nephews. Much of it was recorded in hotel rooms across the country while on the Buffett tour. I am immensely thankful to the "All Star Cast of Characters" who so generously shared their talent on this project. MAC MCANALLY generously donated his studio for the tracking in Muscle Shoals. Mac is notable as a producer of artists ranging from Jimmy Buffett to Ricky Skaggs to Sawyer Brown. His guitar work and harmony vocals can be heard on albums by such luminaries as Lyle Lovett, Trisha Yearwood, Keith Whitley, Nanci Griffith, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, George Jones, Reba McEntire, Hank Williams Jr. and Patty Loveless, among others. As a songwriter, McAnally has provided hits for Buffett ("It's My Job"), Alabama ("Old Flame"), Shenandoah ("Two Dozen Roses"), Steve Wariner ("Precious Thing"), Sammy Kershaw ("Southbound"), Nanci Griffith ("Nickel Dreams") and Sawyer Brown (the Grammy-nominated "All These Years"). He is also a song publisher and arranger. ALAN SCHULMAN is an award winning, hall of fame engineer with two Grammy awards for engineering Ricky Skaggs, received a Music Industry Award from the Alabama Hall of Fame in 2002, and was chosen "One of 10 Best Engineers of Nashville." Alan's engineering has been on 40 million record sales. Alan has also written songs recorded by: Alabama, and Anne Murray. NADIRAH SHAKOOR sang on a few of the songs. In 1992, Nadirah joined the Grammy Award-winning group Arrested Development as the lead female vocalist. In 1994 Nadirah co-wrote and produced a song for the hip-hop compilation album State of Emergency. The song entitled "The Winds of Karma" was her first solo venture. Nadirah has now stepped out and put her own special brand of talent, experience and hard work in motion for the world to enjoy with her first solo album Soul Power. Her album credits include: Ralph MacDonald, Jimmy Buffett, Speech, Arrested Development, Quincy Jones, Madonna, Phillip Bailey, California Raisins, Jody Watley, Angela Bofill, Jermaine Jackson. TINA GULLICKSON is one of the female singers on "Funky as a Diaper" "What's Colder Than Cool," etc. A native Californian, Tina has recorded with Tori Amos, Martika, and Bill Medley among others. In 1995, Tina joined The Coral Reefer Band, a calling she now refers to as "the best job in the world." In 1997, she was the executive producer and stylist for fellow Coral Reefer Peter Mayer's music video "Shall We Dance" and is now working on writing and recording her first solo project. AMY LEE - the scream on "Rain" (multi tracked in a hotel room) Amy has worked extensively in the studio as a performer, arranger and composer. Amy's first major label release was on a Coral Reefer Band sampler album, Margaritaville Café: Light Night Menu, writing and recording her instrumental "Sugartown Shakedown." As a studio musician, Amy has recorded on every Jimmy Buffett album released since 1994, totaling nine to date. Other album credits include gospel recording artist Luther Barnes & the Sunset Jubilees: A Live Celebration and Nothing Can Be Better; the rap group, Yall So Stupid, Van Full of Pakistans; and the Grammy-nominated Richard Smallwood Singers, Portrait. TOM MITCHELL - sax on "Where's the Turkey." Tom Mitchell has been actively involved with the Haitian music scene. He lived in Port-au-Prince for 2 years, learning to speak Creole, and has been an honored guest of the Haitian world ever since. His stint with the legendary band Tabou Combo took a move to New York where he played with just about every band from Haiti, including Tabou Combo, RAM, Ti Manno, and many others. Coincidentally, Jimmy Buffett was a big fan of Tabou Combo and, as a result, in 1994 Tom started touring as a Coral Reefer. JEFF COFFIIN from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, played quite a bit on "Funky," "Schmoopie," and "There's Nothing Like a Dog." Jeff has also performed with the Dave Matthews Band, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Branford Marsalis, Charlie Hunter, The Wailers, Karl Denson & Tiny Universe, Galactic, Phish, Widespread Panic, String Cheese Incident, Bruce Hornsby, Van Morrison, John Scofield, Chick Corea, Don Henley, Glenn Frye, Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, to name just a few! ROY AGEE - trombone player on "I Am a 3 Legged Dog." Roy lives in Nashville but is from New York City. What a great player he is! He made it sound just like a bad student. Roy has performed with many acts, including The Amazing Rhythm Aces, Johnny Neel of the Allman Brothers, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Claude McNight with Take 6, the Tennessee Jazz Orchestra, and his own Roy Agee trio. ROGER GUTH from the band played on much of the CD. CHRIS WALTERS (from the group "Alabama") - on piano LARRY BYRON A member of Steppenwolf. Has recorded multiple WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: "I just wanted to send you a little note to let you know how much the children liked your CD. I knew they were going to like it as soon as I played it because I saw shoulders moving, feet tapping, and heads bobbing. I played the CD initially while the children (4 and 5 yr. olds) were doing their projects at tables. Even when no music was playing I would often hear them singing "Funky As A Diaper." I even caught myself walking around the room singing it. We also learned a few songs at circle time. Our favorites were "Rain" and "Smile in the Sky." I used those songs around Earth Day and they became so popular we sang them the rest of the school year." -Marvanne Kouvaros, Teacher Reading, PA "My family has made your song, "Where''s the Turkey" a holiday tradition. Without telling them what to expect, I slipped the CD on to see what their reaction would be. Needless to say, they loved it. You were the hit of Thanksgiving!" - Carol McGraw Bassett, VA "Funky as a Diaper displaced "Wayne From Maine" as the official kids CD we need to listen to FIRST on our ski trips. My kids just love the CD. My 7 year-old and I recite lyrics from different songs now and he laughs so hard when he sings them." -Lesley Macomber Westford, MA "I've been using the CD at school with my kindergarteners and they love it! It has gotten us through quite a few rain, rain, rainy days that we've had recently this fall in NC!!! Thank you Uncle Jim." - Debbie Morton "Uncle Jim has really unleashed some creative juices in this CD. . . . A treasure in the family trove!" -Hunter Bell Manassas, VA "I bought your CD with the best of intentions of giving it away to a friend with small children. However, in the midst of listening to it, somehow I became attached. Ouch! So I will need to get a second CD for my friend." -Carol "I was on my way home listening to Funky As A Diaper. I missed a road by about 10 miles because I got into it so much and was laughing so hard, I actually missed driving through a whole town. That CD is a stroke of genius. I can't wait to share it with others." - Pam Stroven Augusta, GA Check out the artist's website: http://www.jimmayer.com Track List: 1. Uncle Jim Theme 2. Funky As A Diaper 3. Lonely Broccoli 4.
