"Jai" is a word used in many of our chants. It is often translated as "victory" or "hail." The British-English translations fall short of conveying spiritual impact. "Jai," "Jaya," even the word "wah,"... these are all expressions of speechlessness. When you cannot say anything, when the vastness of the Universe is acknowledged and bowed to, when your heart opens, when your life falls apart, when you win a million dollars, when you turn on the TV and see disaster... all you can say is "wow...." This is "Jai." This is the opening.
These chants are the ones we composed on tour. The longer we stayed on tour, the more new chants came forward. This CD is a collection of the songs many audiences already knew and loved. The original tracks were recorded in December 2002. A beautiful window of silence was created while everyone was away on Christmas holiday, and it allowed me some creative, quiet space in the studio. "Durge" and "Shree Krishna" were readily available; we had been playing them every night on tour. "What She Has to Give" was a lovesong rejected from the Opium CD, but we performed it often. "Bolo Ram" was a collection of chants we had been doing in a million different ways. And then there were the special gifts, "Shyam Bolo Jai" and "Gayatri" which came to me directly from the silence of the moment. "Om Mani Padme Hum" was resurrected to give us 67 minutes total. Jai Jai Jai - one opening for each realm: mortal, immortal, and divine. Jai ! ~ heaven, earth, and beyond. May all beings find happiness and peace. Om Shanti wah! more at... www.wahmusic.com Editorial Reviews Backroads Music/Corte Madera, CA Western musical styles and Eastern spirituality come together seamlessly on Wah!'s Jai Jai Jai, an intoxicating album of chants themed after love, wisdom and praise. The serene sounds of light harmonium, pennywhistle, violin, percussion and guitar comprise the flowing backdrops on which Wah!'s call-and-response style Sanskrit mantras float airily, like whispers on the wind. Shri Krishna, which slowly builds in intensity as the song progresses, is a great example of joyous, uplifting chanting that has universal appeal. Another highlight is Om Mani Padme Hum - a beautiful song whose use of whistle, guitar and Wah!'s ethereal vocals almost make it sound Celtic. This is a great addition to Wah!'s collection of albums of devotional chant. Her soulful sound now may be heard on six different CDs. 7/10/04 Ellis Widner/The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Wah! has an alluring voice that soothes, implores and invites listeners to celebrate the sacred through chant. Her mix of vocal passion and elegance, subtle grooves and accessible song structure pulls a listener into her realm. Wah! has found a fertile ground between Western music and Eastern spirituality. 5/30/04 Adam Skolnick/LA Yoga Magazine Wah!'s intelligent song structure and funky bass grooves support an ethereal and elegant vocal which carves through extended chants while shifting ambience, mood and tempo smoothly. Throughout the disc are inflections from Africa, India, and American pop. My favorite track is Durge - I love the traditional melodic line of this mantra praising the goddess, and Wah! begins with it before whirling into a celebratory anthem that uses the call and response structure of kirtan to braid choral harmonies into a large, colorful and infectious tune. This one's a jewel. 1/15/2004 Michael Woodhead/WIND AND WIRE This absolutely marvelous and melodic album proved a delight to listen to, sing along with, and gives the listener an opportunity to relax in its rhythmic tunes. Wah! presents one song in English-What She Has to Give-a light jazzy blues number (for more of her jazz-blues music, check out Wah!'s Opium album). My personal favourite-Sri Krishna. Wah! has traveled to many countries, notably India and Africa, and these places have influenced much of her music. Wah! and her band present music with a blend of pop, reggae and world styles, well worth a listen at any time. 12/1/2003 Mystic Radio/Encinitas, CA Because we are an online radio station, we have the capacity to track who is listening, who leaves and who arrives, during any song. No one ever leaves while WAH! is playing. I get many requests and thanks from people about WAH!'s music. 7/29/03 www.mysticradio.com Fan Reviews Paula/Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Many thanks Wah!! Today we sang "Durge Jai Ma" from your CD "Jai Jai Jai." It's so beautiful, we all get so happy and really touched by your voice. 6/30/2004 Frank Barnett/Cleveland, OH Jai Jai Jai seems to be your best in showing what unique angles Americans can bring to kirtan. Awesome experience. 12/05/03 Alex Baltovski/NYC I just listened to your new CD and If I may say so you have managed to outdo yourself. The words that come to my mind include: inspired, spiritual, full of love, peace and joy. This CD is one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard. All the best. 11/11/2003 PJ Morrison/Pacifica, CA Jai Jai Jai is simply the most exquisite CD in the collection. My friend Tom heard it in the car ~ all he could say was "WOW..." (that is, once he could speak!) Then he kept muttering, "That's one kick ass CD." (Tom's working on his spirituality) No kidding, that's all he could say for 5 minutes. 10/24/03 more at... www.wahmusic.com Check out the artist's website: http://www.wahmusic.com Track List: 1.
