Bio: David and Steve Gordon have pioneered New Age/World music with their award-winning top charting albums for over twenty years. Their influential trademark sound, combining world instruments and sounds of nature has sold well over 1.5 million units worldwide and has been featured in network TV and major motion picture scores such as the recent Fox Searchlight release, "Kissing Jessica Stein" and CBS Sport's Xterra World Championship. Since founding Sequoia Records in 1982, the Gordon brothers have been breaking musical ground, consistently creating albums that top the charts, garner awards, and expand the boundaries of New Age, Body, Mind & Spirit, Lifestyles, World Beat/Chill-out Lounge music. Natives of Southern California, David and Steve Gordon both took an early interest in music. David played the piano, clarinet and flute while Steve learned the piano, guitar and drums. After studying classical music at Los Angeles Valley College and UCLA, the brothers both attended the Grove Music Academy where they studied modern harmony and jazz with such greats as Steve Lukather, Robbin Ford, and Dick Grove. During the next few years of session dates and live performances they would often escape to the peaceful surroundings of Sequoia National Park for much needed breaks in their music schedule. David notes, "We were very much into meditation and Eastern spirituality. We took tape recorders with us, set them up and put on headphones. We would sit and meditate while recording the natural sounds around us. It seemed like we could hear elusive melodies floating through the trees and in the bubbling laughter of the nearby streams." Back in the studio, they blended these sounds with music they composed to reflect the beauty and healing properties of those serene environments. They formed Sequoia Records in 1982 to release their first two albums Misty Forest Morning and Peaceful Evening. These albums combined music and nature so beautifully that they became known as definitive recordings of the newly emerging New Age music genre. Met with critical acclaim and healthy sales, the Gordon brothers continued experimenting and developing their music, which they featured on their next two albums, Astral Journey and Celestial Suite. These recordings were some of the earliest examples of what is known today as Space Music. Tower Records Pulse Magazine called them "Major contributions to authentic New Age music. ...Intimate, quiet, serene and spacious." In 1987 they created and recorded Oneness and Garden of Serenity, as the first two titles in their successful Inner Music Series. Garden of Serenity, to this day, continues to be one the top selling music and nature titles in history. Their next releases Sanctuary and Music of the Tarot continued to build on the success of both their nature and inner environment series, which have since influenced countless New Age music releases by other artists. In the early '90's the brothers began to collect Tribal drums and studied the Native American flute. They envisioned a contemporary native music, combining traditional Native instruments, with guitar, keyboards, and sounds of nature into a new universal world groove. Their 1994 release Sacred Earth Drums successfully blended all of these elements, topping the New Age charts. This influential cross-over recording reached #1 at all the New Age distributors immediately upon release, stayed there for over 3 years and even now remains high on distributors sales charts. Something about the music of Sacred Earth Drums resonates with people wherever it is sold, from record stores, book and gift stores to trading posts and pow-wows. It has been played on many Contemporary Instrumental and New Age radio programs and syndications such as "Echoes" and "Hearts of Space." Reviewers in countless publications have praised it unreservedly. In 1996, David and Steve went back into the studio and created the follow-up to Sacred Earth Drums, which they titled Sacred Spirit Drums. Steve Ryals of New Age Retailer's Fresh Tracks said, "Each superb track flows into the next. Evocative, mysterious, sensual, and profoundly healing." Carol Wright of Napra Review said, "This follow-up to Sacred Earth Drums is sure to be just as big. The drumming is joyous...." With their popular drumming albums, once again the Gordon's became a major influence on the world of New Age music. The dynamic of world dance rhythms, the serenity of native flutes, the expressiveness of guitar, the rich mood of keyboard textures and the powerful beat of native drums, have resulted in a new kind of music, which, once again, has proven influential in changing the direction of New Age music as a whole. In 1997 the brothers celebrated the ten-year anniversary of their earlier release, Garden of Serenity with a follow-up of its own. Garden of Serenity II was released, adding a classical touch to their original sound. While in 1998, Steve collaborated with Spotted Peccary artist Deborah Martin, and created Ancient Power, which mixed the elements of native flute and drums with ambient electronic textures. The Bodhi Tree in Los Angeles called it, "New shamanic sounds for the next century." In 1999 David and Steve inaugurated their new studio, Sequoia Sound, by creating Drum Medicine, which again became an immediate top seller on New Age alternative distributors best selling lists and stayed in the top 5 for over 2 years. Carl McColman wrote in a feature interview for NAV Magazine, "The Gordon's may have launched out of a Native American sensibility, but as their music has flowered, it has become truly a universal indigenous sound - for all people of the earth, from all cultures." And this is precisely what they continue to do. To celebrate their 20th Anniversary in March 2002, they released Sacred Drum Visions, a collection of favorite tracks from their best-selling world drumming titles. This album includes three brand new songs, which continue to expand upon the evolution of their signature contemporary world music sound. Later in 2002, Steve produced his first solo album, Drum Prayer, which won COVR Best World Album of 2002 (first runner up). Steve created a completely unique sound, blending ancient Shaman rhythms, Native-American flute, Spanish guitar, tabla, sarod, and trance-grooves with sacred Lakota, Sanskrit & Tibetan chants. 2002 also saw the launch of the brother's new sub-label, Sequoia Groove. This label was created specifically to feature the new sounds of chill-out/trip-hop/lounge music which blends together various genres such as World, New Age, and down-tempo electronica dance grooves into carefully selected and mixed DJ sets for relaxing and chilling-out. The Gordon's compiled and mixed the tracks for the first Sequoia Groove title, Buddha Lounge in April 2002 which released to extremely favorable reviews in both the U.S. and Europe. During 2002 David also spent time producing a new album with Sequoia guest artist, Sophia entitled Chakra Healing Chants, which has quickly become a Sequoia top-seller, and in 2003 the Gordon's compiled and released Buddha-Lounge 2 , which surpassed even the first release in popularity. In June 2003, David and Steve released their latest collaboration Heart of Peace, the first release in their new Art of Healing Series featuring music designed for extended one hour healing sessions. In the fall of 2003 they also compiled and mixed the next Sequoia Groove release, Café de Luna, with its that blends funky European/ World sounds with hypnotic multi-cultural grooves. David and Steve also produced two new albums by the mystical all-elvin group Everstar, which highlights music inspired by "The Lord of the Rings". While during the winter of 2003/04 Steve produced Jaya Lakshmi's second release, Jewel of Hari. January 2004 saw the Gordon's next release in their acclaimed Inner Music Series, with Garden of Serenity III. In this third release in the series, their music evokes the mood of a stately European garden with classically-influenced music blended artfully with soothing lute, piano, flute, strings, and pure nature sounds. They also took time out to compile and mix the three latest Sequoia Groove releases, World Groove Mix Vol. 1 an innovative combination of Contemporary World and Chill-out music, as well as Buddha-Lounge III and Café De Luna 2 the next releases in these popular series. In early 2005 David & Steve released their latest Sequoia Records title Pillow Music: Natural Deep Sleep the perfect relaxation soundtrack for effortlessly guiding the listener into a natural state of deep rest. The Gordon's are currently working on a number of exciting new projects including a brand new Shamanic Drumming meditation release entitled Shamanic Sound Healing and a new contemporary world release which will blend global rhythms with gypsy violin and flamenco guitar both slated for release in early 2005. Over the years, the brothers have continued to venture out on the leading edge of contemporary New Age and World music, first as healing music pioneers, then as innovative contemporary-world music composers, and now as global music producers with their groundbreaking chill-out/lounge compilations. They remain committed to being out on that leading edge of these exciting genres as they move and expand into the future, pushing the boundaries and connecting their audiences to where music is now and opening the way to where it's going next.
