The sound of the shakuhachi, the bamboo flute of Japan, is unlike any other music you will hear. But maybe that's because it wasn't made to be a concert instrument at all. The Zen monks who played this flute 500 years ago regarded the shakuhachi as a spiritual aide, and played to develop the breath and to help with their meditation.

Santa Cruz musician Nelson Lee is bringing the spiritual power of shakuhachi music to audiences here in the U.S. In today's fast-paced world, people are finding that the unearthly, haunting sound of this ancient instrument gives them a chance to slow down, to relax, and to heal.

Lee has been studying shakuhachi for sixteen years, four of which has been in Japan. He is presently living in Santa Cruz and is teaching and performing the shakuhachi, where he shares the benefits of the shakuhachi with his audiences and his students.
