Since childhood, John has been tapping on everything imaginable including desks, chairs, pots and pans. It came as no surprise when he became a drummer. Drawn to ethnic hand percussion instruments, he has been playing them for over 23 years. John plays drums from various world music traditions including an array of frame drums from India, the Middle East, Ireland and Brazil. He also plays the djembe and the dundun from Africa, and congos from Cuba. John has studied percussion in Cuba, India, Colombia, Brazil and throughout the US. Some of his teachers have been master drummers Jose Aladio, Frankie Malabe, Ganesh Kumar, T.H. Subash Chandran, Swapn Chaudhuri, Glen Velez, Marco Suzano, and others.

John appears on numerous recordings and performs regularly throughout the East Coast. He has performed with Steve Gorn, Glen Velez, Robert Bly, Eugene Friesen, T.H. Subash Chandran, Ganesh Kumar, Krishna Das, Robby Gass, Mark Kelso, Vikki True, and Jim Owen and Tim Witter of Tabla Rasa. John is the founder of the ethnic percussion ensemble, Wakarusa, who are finalizing their latest CD for release in the Summer of 2005. In addition, he has produced and released his own CD in March of 2005 entitled, This Rhythm is Not Mine.

John loves to teach. He creates a safe, fun and non-competitive environment where students learn quickly. John has been leading drum circles for over ten years. He facilitates group classes for corporations, schools and healing centers throughout the United States. He also teaches students privately.

John is a poet and licensed Acupuncturist and herbalist. He has been writing poetry since 1980. Having practiced Yoga and Buddhism for two decades, lived in various ashrams, studied Chinese medicine in-depth, and traveled to many foreign lands, John’s poetry is greatly influenced by both eastern thought and social injustices throughout the world.
