Matthew Schildt grew up in Long Island, New York, and began playing viola at the age of 9. At the age of 15, Matthew first started writing music and playing piano. While many other teenagers where listening to the grunge music from Seattle, Matthew was listening to the Pat Metheny Group, Mark Sloniker, and Joni Mitchell.

Matthew has been playing piano and viola with many different musicians. He has played and collaborated with singer/songwriter Steve McClain and the band Case of Culler. Matthew has played in coffee houses, clubs, and outdoor venues in Northeastern Ohio and southern Colorado. Simplicity is Matthew's first solo CD and was recorded in 2003. The CD features Matthew on piano and viola, Steve McClain on guitar, Todd Hemberger on drums, and Dave Nay on saxophone. Songs from the CD have been heard on 91.3 The Summit in Akron, Ohio. The album features Matthew Schildt's original compositions, as well as one cover of Pat Metheny's "In her Family". The album is at times quiet and introspective and at other times upbeat and jazzy, ranging from solo piano to fully orchestrated compositions.
