A California native, Reiko Obata began studying koto in 1980 under masters in both the U.S. and Japan, including composer virtuoso Shinichi Yuize. She has her master's degree in music from San Diego State University and her Japanese master's degree (shihan) in koto from the Seiha School of Japanese Music. Reiko has recorded her own compositions and arrangements on two CDs, "Serenity" and "Sound of Kiri." She has performed with San Diego Symphony cellist Mary Oda Szanto and percussionist Jonathan Szanto, jazz saxophonist Hollis Gentry III, jazz shakuhachi composer John Kaizan Neptune, pianist composer David Ward-Steinman, and guitarist Fred Benedetti. Reiko has performed on several radio programs including Jazz 88 and KPBS radio. She has performed koto in many venues throughout Southern California including San Diego Japanese Friendship Garden, La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego Convention Center, Sea World, Wild Animal Park, Warner Brothers Studio, and the Idyllwild Jazz Festival.
