Currently a conducting student at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music at the age of twenty-two, Steve Hackman has performed as pianist, conductor, singer, arranger, and composer. He received his Bachelor's of Music in Piano from University of Illinois, where he also sang in and directed the "The Other Guys", an eight-member comedy octet that toured the country and Europe, produced albums yearly, and placed second in the country at the National Collegiate Championship of College A cappella. His arrangements are featured on their current albums, "Black" and "White". At the University of Illinois, he also arranged for and conducted the Varsity Men's Glee Club.
His recent recital programs include both classical piano selections and his own music, which he plays and sings on this debut album, "First Impressions."
The album represents a complete one-man effort, Hackman having composed all the music, played and sung all the notes, arranged all the parts, and even mixed the album down himself. It is hard to believe that voice and piano are the only two instruments used on the album, since the layering of piano parts and background vocals is varied so artistically with each song. The sense of musical space created by this young man is astonishing (we should expect nothing less from a Curtis student).
