Trio Nocturna was formed in 1992 by Celtic harpist Thomas Dodd, taking it's name from the classical music terms, trio sonata and nocturne. A 1993 release entitled "Morphia" established the band as a up and coming entity in the underground Gothic scene.
1994 saw the disintegration of the original "trio" and it's conceptual rebirth as an ethereal Celtic/Gothic ensemble augmented by violin. On it's 1995 release "Tears of Light" the band again received highly favorable reviews in the underground press for it's atmospheric sound and mythological lyrics, while the group's live shows in New Orleans (at the Anne Rice Halloween Balls), Chicago ("Nocturna" at Club Neo), and their hometown of Atlanta (the World Horror Convention, Dragon Con, and a monthly residency at the Red Light Cafe) established Trio Nocturna as more than just a "studio project". A 1995 tour with Human Drama was followed by a hometown appearance with Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale. Trio Nocturna entered the studio in early 1996 to begin work on their third record "Songs of the Celtic Night". Joined by a diverse array of guest musicians (Irish bagpipes, percussion, electric violin), this project was their most ambitious recording yet. Upon it's release, the record was highly acclaimed in the mainstream press for it's unique and modern interpretation of Celtic music.
