Zorah Staar is a songwriter, singer and musician who makes "pagan pop" or "radically-uplifting pagan music that rocks, bops and boogies you across the dance floor, along with some powerfully loving ballads to catch your breath" (CD's & more at www.paganpopmusic.com). Her songs blend lyrics about love, the earth, Goddess, God, and other age-old pagan themes with wild new pop, disco and Celtic rock sounds. Think of an infectious fusion somewhere between Tori Amos and Loreena McKennitt, all ecstatically played by Zorah (on guitar and piano) and the other magical musicians on her latest album (called "pagan pop").
Where does "pagan pop" come from? The song "Spiral dance" honours the beautifully winding pattern danced on the earth by many peoples from time immemorial, and is an "unabashedly happy blend of afro-celtic-ish rhythms with lyrics about the many magical spirals of nature and our universe." The Goddess song "Nehalennia" was inspired by an ancient Celtic and Frisian temple, and melds pounding dance beats with lyrics of lyrics of transformation and optimism - "So many shining worlds to be, let's start to create what we can't yet see!" Just as integral to the developing "pagan pop" sound have been Zorah's fellow musicians: amazing multi-instrumentalist Adrian Shamberger, who's played with the Rheostatics and many others, and gifted percussionist John Hildebrand, formerly with the Celtic funk bank "Mad Pudding."
Zorah Staar's biggest dream is to help contribute to the transformation of the world through music. In addition to creating "pagan pop," she believes in sharing the fun, passion and magic of all kinds of music with all kinds of people, and plans to be a student of music and a student of love for as long as she's around.
