PCC has always been best at making keen observations
of the banality of everyday life and turning those
ideas into great pop songs. "Kennedy" is full of this
minutia, resulting in a compelling listen from
beginning to end. — Tony Tarbox ARTSCENE

POWER POP

The Poison Control Center are an indie rock band that
hails from Ames, IA. Their music, usually in song
cycles, belies an amazingly fluid arrangement of
melodies, lyrics and sounds that flow together into a
whole creating its own magical world. The band started
off as a 13 piece pop-orchestra of madness and mayhem
that released a single and EP "The Go-Go Music Show"
and did garner some national attention as a featured
obscure Gem of the month on NPR's Todd Mundt show.
Most of the band members were under the age of 20 at
this time. Also at this time, the band recorded a
double disc Rock Opera that has yet to be released. In
2002, the band settled into a groove as a five-piece
pop explosion. With their single "Little N Marie U",
the Poison Control Center refines that breakthrough,
consciously synthesizing such disparate influences as
psychedelia, art-song, classical music, rock & roll,
and chamber pop, often in the course of one song. Not
once does the diversity seem forced - the genius of
the record is how the vaudevillian "Sunshine Factory"
seems like a logical extension of "Little N Marie U"
and how it provides a gateway to the crashing guitars
of "the New Moon..." and "Good Morning." This single
received rave reviews all around the country. On their
next EP, "You Forever," (Paisley and Twee) each song
on the sprawling record is an entity to itself, as the
band touches on anything and everything they can. This
makes for a frustratingly scatter-shot record or a
singularly gripping musical experience, depending on
your view. What makes the "You Forever," EP
interesting is its mess. What kind of band is this?
Known for their incredible live show, "their live show
blows any other in question, way out of the
water,"--Lo-Fi Junk 2003. The band touches on
dream-pop, garage rock, looped hard edged psych pop,
experimental noise, and even country. After a crazy
early 2004 in which they toured the country, played a
show with Max Weinberg (E Street Band/ Max Weinberg 7)
on drums and a slot at the Athens Popfest the band
started playing as a 4 piece. In 2005, Patrick went on
a 30-date solo tour promoting the band's 30 minute EP
"Did they live happily ever After?" on Popgun
Recordings. The recording went on to be the best
selling release Popgun Recordings has ever had! And in
May of 2005, the band entered the studio to cut their
new Mini Album "Kennedy" to be released in Oct of 2005
on Bi-Fi Records. "Kennedy" a concept album that dealt
with pop culture from all angles was quickly a
standard among indie rock cd collections around the
country. Both eps were featured on many 2005 year end
top ten list! In the summer of 2005, the PCC hit the
road for a 35-date tour playing 5 straight nights in
New York City and another spot at the Athens POPFEST
with Of Montreal and Pylon! In Sept of 2005, the band
made their first CMJ Festval showcase performance in
New York City. In Nov. of 2005, Patrick hit the road
for another solo tour to finish out a year where the
band or solo played 125 shows, put out two eps and a
single and were on 5 comp. cds. At the start of 2006,
the band hit Pat Stolley studio in Rock Island, IL to
start work on their debut full length... The Poison
Control Center's songs continue being spastic
psych-pop vignettes that fill minds with images and
ideas, as their live shows usually end with a massive
pig-pile of band members and spectators. "We want to
break down the wall between crowd and band, everyone
needs to feel each others' sweat to make it magical!"
