When I began writing these songs, I loved popular music but I didn't have any contact with the people who played it. I had studied the piano for many years, and had friends who were classical musicians, but I didn't know anyone who could have helped me bring the sort of music I wrote to life. No-one heard any of my songs until a small evening concert at the college I was staying, when I was invited to present an item, and decided to perform 'Nightfall', accompanied by a backing singer and acoustic guitar. After getting a very encouraging response from the audience, I donned a cowgirl outfit at another function later than year and performed the comedy country song 'Too Perfect to be Single', which also received a great response. The success of these two live performances made me think for the first time about recording some of my music.
As I didn't have a band, or any contacts in the music scene, I didn't know how to approach the recording process. For my first effort, I just grabbed someone I knew who played the guitar, gave him the chords for 'Nightfall' and then went to a cheap studio. The result wasn't very polished, but it was still very exciting to have a recording of my own song. A year or so later I went through the same process and recorded 'Love is a Stranger'.
By the time I started thinking about finding musicians for the next song I wanted to record, I was starting to get frustrated with the slow rate of progress. At this pace, I thought, it will take me 10 years to put together an album! Fortunately, it was at that point that I went to a training day for a casual job and ran into an English guy who mentioned that he was a keyboard player. I contacted him afterwards and showed him some of my songs, and he offered to arrange and produce them professionally. About eight months later, we finished recording the 11 songs on 'Window to the Past'.
