Ion Drive based in Oshkosh, WI got together in 2001 under unlikely circumstances. Ed Crowley (bass), and Brett Stephenson (guitar), had just left Irene's Garden (a galactic hippy groove group from Stevens Point, WI), in hopes of starting a jazz gig. Ed had previously been in metal bands like Hammer and Raw Meat out of Minneapolis. Brett came schooled in jazz from Marquette, MI and Seattle but had jammed mainly in rock and punk bands like Black Helicopter and Red Fish Blue Fish previous to Irene's. Fueled by case after case of less than respectable grog, the two wrote several arrangements, then set out to find a drummer to complete the trio. Scott Vanden Boom (drums), was a long time metal merchant with Psycho Holiday and Pile and a friend of Ed's for nearly 20 years though the two had never jammed together. He had been out of music for 2 years and was looking for something different when he responded to Ed's ad in the paper. The two were shocked and awed when they realized who was on the other end of the phone. Because of their love for the metal arts, neither one would have imagined the other playing in a jazz band. They set up shop at Brett's and started to write some jazz. But after about a year of writing, it became apparent that they couldn't escape their Jurassic period and the new songs started to take a more old school rock form. They went with it, creating rangy songs with solid grooves on bass and drums while lacing it with heady rock and jazz style guitar chords. With all three writing and doing vocals, they played some small gigs and headed into Rock Garden Studio in Appleton, WI for the 2004 CD release titled "On". Post recording, they are enjoying their passion for writing and more less than respectable grog.
