Romp is a San Francisco based hard rock/ indie/noise-pop band. Formed in January of 2002 with Rich DeWilde and Alan Katzman on guitars and vocals, Bill Cooper on bass and vocals, and Rom Kuras on drums, members of Romp have all crashed the local circuit before. In past bands Life with Bunny, the Merciful, and Porcelain, members have headlined the Bottom of the Hill, the Paradise, Trocadero, etc., and have gigged at Slim’s and the Fillmore. Members have also played Noise-Pop and a NARAS/ Grammy showcase as one of the top 40 unsigned bands (Porcelain) in the country as voted by NARAS.
Since Romp’s formation, the group has spent many hours defining and refining its sound: thick, juicy, crunchy, buzzsaw guitars and a crisp pounding drum and bass. Scratchy vocals and smooth harmonies top it off with lyrics encompassing satire, cheap sex, nothingness, and even a genuine concern for the betterment of the world. The end product is a rich, fertile noise-pop garage rock sound that has been compared most often to Television but also Mission of Burma, Social Distortion, P.I.L., and Iggy Pop.
On the strength of a 3-song demo, ROMP started gigging in August of 2002. ROMP has played shows at Club Galia, the Red Devil Lounge, Tongue and Groove, Thee Parkside, the Last Day Saloon and the Stork Club. ROMP’s powerful live performance quickly garnered them weekend slots at Kimo’s, the Voodoo Lounge, and Tongue and Groove.
ROMP has now released their initial cd. The different vocalists, vocal stylings, and collaborative efforts keep the music exciting, fresh, and original. ROMP looks forward to, and already is, expanding their sound and soundscapes as they progress as a band. The sound is jelling but this is merely the beginning. In the final equation though, simply put, ROMP ROCKS.
