Thanks to a certain celebrated big band drummer, the surname Krupa is well known to music buffs. However, even if that weren't the case, the dexterous fingers of Dave Krupa, guitarist for Hopah, could potentially make the name renowned. Though not every selection on Hoodwinked -- the band's fresh six-song CD -- is altogether bracing, skillful fretwork, decent drumming, and some meaty bass playing energize "Starts Now" and "Lazy Olive Ridge." The group offers a great mélange of rock-, jazz-, and funk-infused tunes, made even more mesmerizing by Krupa's clearly competent showmanship. (Contact: www.hopah.com.)
