(Columbus, OH) -- Any bands that would take up the challenge of bringing the dynamic flair of Phish to this region will be sharing the scene with a new jamband, SENS, a group with roots planted close to the Grateful Dead but offering a fresh new sound. SENS brings a mix of musical talent, creative vision and whimsical humor to central Ohio in a way that is exhilarating and long overdue.
The three members the group, Gwen Grimes (keyboards/vocals), Rob Chandler (guitar/vocals), and Stu Crair (percussion), have created a musical vibe that stands out among indie bands in the area. Pushing a new set list at every show, the band takes listeners with them on a magical musical tour that makes it impossible to plug them into solely one genre. Songs veer from classic rock to thrummy funk to a layered jazz riff and back again. Rob Chandler's guitar-playing dances from a bluesy weep and whine to the crunchy rip of rock chords. Gwen Grimes, a keyboard artist of soaring ability, alternately floats over the keys or pounds out the tunes in a primal demand for more sound than any mere piano key should be expected to deliver. Backed by Stu Crair's potent, thumping beat, the band lures you with its lively mix of song styles, always keeping you bolted down firmly in its rock foundation. Seeing the band in live performance offers a chance to unhinge and drift freely across the musical landscape. Jams that first sound like a collection of flashy rambles soon evolve into tightly-paced compositions, exposing the raw underlying talent of the group. SENS has just completed their first round in the studio so keep your ears open and hold on. The results will lift you out of the routine High Street shuffle of sound-a-likes to a place that makes you feel like don't have to go any further. You've found it.
